I researched this family because of a request that I received in January 2013 from a descendant of Alfred John Langley of Canada. He had found
that the 1894 will of A J Langley included a reference to his sister Mrs Elizabeth Turner of Epsom, Auckland, New Zealand. He did not know of any
connection of his Langley family in New Zealand.
I found that Elizabeth was listed in the electoral roll of 1893 (the year in which women first had the vote in New Zealand and the world). The Manukau electoral roll included Elizabeth Langley Turner, a resident of Epsom, domestic duties. I found the early Langley family on the Family Search website and located the Turner descendants in New Zealand. There are four other entries for the family in the 1893 electoral rolls: Waiapu electoral roll, Elizabeth Langley Hallett, Patoka (Hawkes Bay), married City of Auckland electoral roll, Donald Langley Turner, Princes Street, traveller Wellington electoral roll, Donald Langley Turner, Manners Street, chemist Manukau electoral roll, Mary Ellen McIntosh, Epsom, domestic duties Elizabeth Turner and two daughters are recorded in the 1871 English census as follows: TURNER, Elizabeth, Head, Widow, 49, Confectioner, born Staffordshire Lichfield TURNER, Elizabeth L, Daughter, unmarried, 22, Confectioner, born America U S TURNER, Mary E, Daughter, unmarried, 15, Telegraphist (public), born America U S Piece: 4569, Folio: 20 Page: 34 Registration District: Leeds, Civil Parish: Headingley cum Burley Municipal Borough: Leeds, Address: Hyde Park Corner, Headingley Cum Burley, Leeds, County: Yorkshire When Elizabeth (junior) married Thomas Hallett in 1881, the newspaper report of the marriage said that the bride was the eldest daughter of the late Mr Donald Turner of Brooklyn, U S.
